Activities

There are a range of activities that can be undertaken at Templars' Park, ranging from Instructor-led activities (Abseiling, Climbing, Crate-climbing and Archery) to Leader-led (self supervised) activities (Traverse-wall, Orienteering, Pioneering, Adventure Course and Backwoods Cooking).

Booking is essential for all on-site instructor led-activities.

Abseiling

Templars' Park has a purpose built abseil and climbing tower which has an 6m wall for abseiling which provides a good introduction for beginners and a challenge a wide range of ages and abilities. Each session will be tailored to individual groups requirements and abilities.

Sessions aim to develop self-confidence and team building through roped activities at height in a safe environment and to offer an introduction to, and development of abseiling as a skill.

Adventure Course

Using the purpose-built course, this activity can be either a team-building or individual challenge and features a number of different obstacles including, tunnels, monkey ladder, wall climbs, and a variety of puzzles, with a final climb over the cargo net.


Special Instructions: Use of the adventure course must be supervised by competent leaders and a risk assessment carried by leaders before allowing members to use the obstacles.  Helmets and gloves are optional but advised.

Backwoods Cooking

There are a number of areas around the site which are suitable for backwoods cooking activities including the small campfire circle and designated ground fire areas (Rookery, Old Training Ground and Green Lady).

Special Instructions: Ground fires should only be lit in designated areas (check with Templars' site staff if unsure) and no other areas or pits should be dug.  When finished all fires should be fully extinguished and tidied up appropriately.

Barn

The Barn is available for a variety of purposes such as a wet weather activity area, meetings, disco venue, etc.

In most cases the Barn is available on a first-come, first-served basis, although it can be booked in advance through Templars' Park site staff (subject to other bookings and activities e.g. indoor archery).

Climbing

Crate Climbing

Offsite Activities

There are a wide range of off-site activities that can be undertaken in the surrounding area.  Visiting groups will be spoilt for choice as activities are available to suit all interests.

We cannot arrange any bookings for off-site activities, but we can offer advice!

Orienteering

A way to explore the site and do an activity at the same time as a group or individual challenge.

The site has a semi-permanent orienteering course, with three routes/levels of difficulty (Easy, Medium, Hard) available.

Maps and instruction packs borrowed from Templars' site staff must be returned after the activity.

The courses will change periodically so please check with Templars' site staff or the website to ensure that you have the latest courses and information.

Special Instructions: An Adult should supervise. Templars' site staff should have the packs available, if not previously arranged.

Pioneering

There are a number of pioneering poles (including a variety of lengths & sizes) availabel for use and are situated in the pole store (next to the small campfire circle). Users should supply their own ropes and other equipment (although a small amount of ropes are available on site through prior arrangement).

Special Instructions: All pioneering projects should be dismantled and the equipment returned to the pole store when finished and before leaving site.  It would be appreciated that groups do not use all the poles without prior arrangement to ensure that all groups have the opportunity to use the equipment if required, and it would be useful to check with Templars' site staff for availability and prior requests.

Pond Dipping

Pond dipping is an activity you can run yourself. Available for use are instructions on how to catch beasties, identifiacation sheets (laminated so they don't get soggy), nets and trays (to catch and then see what you have caught). Our small pond has tadpoles, in the right season,  pond skaters, midge larvae and a host of other interseting delights (including ducks). Give it a try and leave us a note of what you think you have found.

Shop

Templars' Park Scout Campsite has a lovely little shop manned by scouting volunteers. For sale are sweets of all sorts and prices from 2p upwards - including jellly babies, fried eggs, and other individual sweets to mars bars, baby bottles and much more (stock varies). 30p and 50p bags are already made up for customers to purchase. The chill cabinet holds drinks in cans and bottles while the freezer has ice poles and frozen drinks. Then there are those items you forgot to pack for camp and a memento of your camp visit in the form of a mug or badge, etc. Shop opening times are displayed outside the shop or can be arranged in advance by e-mail.

Target Archery

The site has a permanent outdoor range and instructors/equipment available for hire.  Depending on the weather, the activity may be provided indoors using the Barn.  Use of the range must be booked in advance with the number and age of the participants.  

All instructors are trained according to the standards of the Grand National Archery Society (GNAS) now known as Archery UK and all hold valid Scouting Activity Archery Permits while following the Templars' Park archery procedures.

Activity sessions aim to provide a basic instruction on the skills of archery which help with co-ordination, confidence and patience.

[Depending on the site use Clout archery may be available as an alternative and this must be discussed and arranged in advance.)

Traverse Wall

A low level climbing activity that challenges participants to make their way across the bottom of the climbing wall using a variety of different holds.

Special Instructions: An adult must supervise participants whilst they are using the traverse wall. Spotting is highly recommended. Participants must not climb above the height of the first panel.
